repair can be a stressful situation for any homeowner. Your home could already be experiencing severe water damage behind the scenes, and you not even be aware. Everyone knows that a leak in a boat left untreated sinks the whole ship. Of course, as soon as you discover the damage caused by water you should contact professionals, such as Total Restoration, to assess the damage and help return your water intruded house into a home. However, here are some simple tips to keep your home shipshape and warning signs of when it’s not.
Gutters: Cleaning the gutters is a pain in the neck. However, clean gutters allow rainfall to run off of your roof and NOT into your home. Clogged gutters cause several problems. Water should travel from your roof and into the ground far enough from your home to not affect the dampness of the soil around it.
Pipes: When you turn on your sink, is water going anywhere other than out the faucet head, down the drain, and into the pipes? If you notice leaking pipes or no water coming out of the faucet at all, your home is showing signs of water damage. Call a professional to come check it out and save yourself loads of stress later on.
Paint: Paint on your walls, ceilings, or floors can be a big warning sign. Water damage can cause paint to crack, chip, bubble, and even experience a color change.
Foundation: When your foundation begins to crack or show signs of water damage it could lead you back to your gutters or underground pipes.
Caulk: Another good thing to look for signs of water damage is cracking or peeling caulk around the bases of your sinks, drains, and/or windows. Caulk tends to deteriorate when experiencing a lot of water damage and should be replaced when needed.
Roof: If your roof is starting to lose shingles or curl at the edges, it might be a good idea to get some things checked out. Also, keep an extra eye on your roof if it’s a flat roof instead of an angled roof. Blockage on a flat roof can keep rain stuck on the roof which adds extra weight and strain to your roof.
Doors and Windows: Doors tend to take on water similar to a sponge, which can make them harder to open and close. As you probably guessed, doors should not soak in water and are a good sign of water damage if they are.
Smell: Water damage starts to smell pretty bad after a while and is a clear sign that something is wrong. If you find a constant musty smell of mildew or mold, you can assume there is water where it shouldn’t be.
Apart from these few provided, other warning signs could include obvious things such as mold or rot, puddles, water stains on your ceiling, drafts from doors and windows, damp walls, and flakey wallpaper. Disaster can’t always be prevented, and when it strikes Total Restoration is here to help. However, it is important to see the signs of water damage before it goes too far.
